16MnDR

16MnDR

16MnDR is a low-alloy high-strength steel specifically engineered for cryogenic pressure vessel applications. Compliant with GB/T 3531-2014 (China) and internationally recognized, this grade excels in environments demanding exceptional low-temperature toughness, weldability, and resistance to hydrogen-induced cracking.

‍Chemical Composition

The controlled alloy design ensures balanced strength and ductility:

  • Carbon (C): ≤0.20% (optimized to minimize brittleness while maintaining strength).
  • Manganese (Mn): 1.20–1.60% (primary strengthening element, enhances hardenability and low-temperature performance).
  • Silicon (Si): 0.15–0.50% (improves deoxidation and solid-solution strengthening).
  • Phosphorus (P): ≤0.025%, Sulfur (S): ≤0.012% (strictly limited to reduce segregation and embrittlement).
  • Optional Microalloys: Niobium (Nb), Vanadium (V), or Nickel (Ni) may be added to refine grain structure and enhance hydrogen resistance.

Mechanical Properties

16MnDR exhibits robust performance across varying thicknesses and temperatures:

  • Tensile Strength (Rm): 440–620 MPa (dependent on thickness and heat treatment).
  • Yield Strength (ReL):
    • 6–16mm: ≥315 MPa
    • 16–36mm: ≥295 MPa
    • 36–60mm: ≥285 MPa
    • 60–100mm: ≥275 MPa
    • 100–120mm: ≥265 MPa
  • Elongation (A): ≥21% (ensures ductility under deformation).
  • Low-Temperature Toughness:
    • -40°C Charpy V-Notch Impact: ≥47J (critical for cryogenic integrity).
    • Bend Test: Passes 180° bending (diameter 2a–3a based on thickness).

Applications

16MnDR is pivotal in industries requiring reliability under extreme conditions:

  • Energy & Petrochemical:
    • LNG storage tanks (-162°C), hydrogenation reactors, cryogenic pipelines.
    • Offshore platforms and subsea equipment (resists marine corrosion).
  • Power & Nuclear: Pressure vessels for nuclear reactors, boiler components.
  • Chemical Processing: Reactors for acetic acid, sulfuric acid, and chlorine derivatives.
  • Aerospace & Shipbuilding: Structural components for cryogenic fuel tanks and marine vessels.

Global Equivalent Grades

16MnDR aligns with international standards for cross-border engineering projects:

SA516 Gr.70 - ASTM A516/A516M

P355GH - EN 10028-2

SLCMN440 - JIS G3115

P355NH - ISO 9328-2

Advantages

  • Cost-Effective: Superior performance-to-cost ratio compared to high-nickel alloys.
  • Weldability: Compatible with SMAW, SAW, and GTAW processes; preheating optional for thin sections.
  • Certifications: Complies with ASME, PED, and GB/T 713 for global regulatory compliance.
